Surah Al-Furqan opens by praising Allah who revealed the Quran as "the Criterion" (Al-Furqan), meaning the standard that distinguishes truth from falsehood. The surah refutes the Quraysh's objections to the Prophet by presenting him as a human being deliberately sent to walk among the people and engage with them. It concludes with a beautiful description of the "servants of the Most Merciful" (Ibad al-Rahman), presenting the ideal characteristics of the believer.
أسباب النزول
Revealed during the middle Makkan period in response to specific objections the Quraysh raised against the Prophet. They asked: "Why was this Quran not revealed to a great man from one of the two cities?" (10:31) and complained that he was not an angel. The surah was revealed to systematically address these objections and to conclude with a portrait of true believers that would inspire the persecuted Muslim community.
“And the servants of the Most Merciful are those who walk upon the earth easily (in humility).”
The beginning of the famous description of "Ibad al-Rahman" (servants of the Most Merciful) spanning verses 63-77. This passage is one of the most beloved in the Quran, providing a complete ethical and spiritual portrait of the ideal Muslim.
