Al-Haqqah opens with a triple rhetorical question about the Inevitable Reality (the Day of Judgement) before narrating the destruction of 'Ad, Thamud, Pharaoh, and the people of Lut as historical proof that divine punishment is real. It then describes the terrors and rewards of the Day itself in vivid detail – the trumpet blast, the record books, the scales, the righteous in gardens, the condemned in chains. The surah concludes by defending the Quran as genuine divine revelation and warning of the consequences of rejecting it.

Revealed in the Makkan period as part of the Quran's sustained effort to make the reality of the Day of Judgement vivid and inescapable for an audience that treated it with contempt. The historical examples of destroyed nations were particularly resonant for Arabs who knew the ruins of 'Ad and Thamud from their trade routes.
“The Inevitable Reality – what is the Inevitable Reality? And what would make you know what the Inevitable Reality is?”
The triple rhetorical structure signals the magnitude of what is being described – the Day of Judgement is so consequential that even the question of what it is carries dramatic weight.
“So as for he who is given his record in his right hand, he will say, "Here, read my record!"”
The joyful exclamation of the saved soul, whose eagerness to share his record of deeds contrasts sharply with the shame of the condemned – capturing the essence of the Day in a single human moment.
