Al-Mulk opens with a magnificent declaration of Allah's absolute sovereignty and creative perfection, presenting the universe as a flawless design that invites contemplation. It describes the torment of the disbelievers in the Fire who will confess they ignored the warnings, contrasted with the generous reward of those who feared Allah unseen. The surah challenges humans to consider: who could provide water if Allah withheld it? It is widely recited nightly for its reported protective virtue.
أسباب النزول
Revealed in the Makkan period as part of the sustained Quranic argument for monotheism against the polytheism of the Quraysh. The repeated emphasis on Allah's sovereignty over creation, life, and death was designed to confront the Makkan worldview that distributed power among multiple deities. The Prophet's narrations strongly encourage its nightly recitation.
“Blessed is He in whose hand is dominion, and He is over all things competent. He who created death and life to test you as to which of you is best in deed.”
The opening verses frame the entire human experience as a test of deeds – life and death are both created for the purpose of examining moral excellence, not merely biological existence.
“Say: Have you considered – if your water was to become sunken into the earth, who then could bring you flowing water?”
The surah's closing challenge – a single rhetorical question about water demolishes any claim to human self-sufficiency and redirects all gratitude to the one Source of sustenance.
The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: "There is a surah in the Quran of thirty verses that interceded for a man until he was forgiven – it is 'Blessed is He in Whose Hand is the dominion.'" (Reported by Abu Dawud and at-Tirmidhi)
