Overview

Surah Al-Mu'minun opens with a magnificent description of the characteristics of successful believers, covering humility in prayer, avoidance of vain talk, payment of zakat, guarding chastity, and fulfilment of trusts. It then presents the story of creation, the stages of human development in the womb, and narratives of Nuh, Musa, Isa, and other prophets. The surah concludes with a powerful passage on the attributes of the successful believer.

Occasion of Revelation (Asbab al-Nuzul)

Revealed during the middle Makkan period. The opening verses describing the qualities of believers are among the most beloved in the Quran. Umar ibn Al-Khattab reported that when these verses were revealed, the Prophet said: "Ten verses have been revealed to me, whoever acts on them will enter Paradise." The surah was revealed as a comprehensive portrait of the ideal believer to guide and inspire the early Muslim community under persecution.

The famous opening of the surah. When these verses were revealed, the Prophet looked up to the sky and said: "Ten verses have been revealed to me; whoever establishes them will enter Paradise." The qualities then listed form a complete portrait of the successful believer.
