Overview

Surah Al-Qasas gives the most detailed account of Musa's story found in the Quran, tracing his life from birth through his upbringing in Pharaoh's palace, his flight to Madyan, his marriage to the daughter of Shu'ayb, his prophetic call at the Burning Bush, and his confrontation with Pharaoh. The surah draws a parallel between Musa's situation and the Prophet's to console him during the oppression in Makkah and the grief of leaving his home city.

Occasion of Revelation (Asbab al-Nuzul)

Revealed just before the Hijra, when the Prophet was deeply grieved at having to leave Makkah. The extended story of Musa, who also left his homeland and was eventually returned to it, was a direct consolation. Verse 85 ("Indeed, He who ordained the Quran upon you will take you back to your place of return") was specifically revealed at Juhfa, on the road between Makkah and Madinah, as the Prophet wept while looking back at his beloved city.

“And We wanted to confer favour upon those who were oppressed in the land and make them leaders and make them inheritors.”

Revealed at the height of Israelite oppression under Pharaoh. This verse is frequently applied to the condition of persecuted Muslim minorities as a divine promise that the oppressed will ultimately prevail.
