At-Tur opens with six solemn oaths, the first being by Mount Sinai (Al-Tur) – the sacred mountain of Musa's revelation – attesting that divine punishment is inevitable. The surah then vividly describes the terrors of the Day of Judgement, the joys of Paradise, the fellowship of families in the Garden, and the ridicule that will meet those who mocked the believers in this world. It closes by commanding the Prophet to persevere in worship and to trust that Allah is sufficient against those who mock him.
أسباب النزول
Revealed in the middle Makkan period. It is reported that 'Umar ibn al-Khattab heard a man reciting this surah and was so struck by its verses on the Day of Judgement that he remained ill for a month. The surah's powerful oaths and vivid descriptions of the afterlife served as a direct challenge to the Quraysh who dismissed warnings of punishment as mere stories.
“And those who believed and whose descendants followed them in faith – We will join with them their descendants.”
A verse of immense consolation: that the children of believers will be joined with their parents in Paradise by divine grace, even if their own deeds alone would not have merited this elevated station.
“Or were they created by nothing, or were they the creators [of themselves]?”
A celebrated rational argument for the existence of God: things cannot come from nothing, nor can they create themselves – so a Creator must exist. Reported to have struck Jubayr ibn Mut'im so profoundly that he later became Muslim.
