Overview

Al-Fajr opens with a series of solemn oaths by the dawn and the ten nights, then recounts the fates of 'Ad, Thamud, and Pharaoh – three civilisations destroyed for their arrogance and oppression – as warnings to the Quraysh. The surah then addresses a fundamental human error: judging divine favour and disfavour by material wealth and poverty. It concludes with a majestic scene of the Last Day and an invitation to the righteous soul to return to its Lord in peace and enter His Garden.

أسباب النزول

Occasion of Revelation (Asbab al-Nuzul)

Revealed in the early Meccan period as the Prophet faced the Quraysh's material pride and their dismissal of accountability. The destruction of ancient civilisations was invoked as tangible proof that Allah brings down the arrogant. The "ten nights" of the oath have been interpreted by scholars as the first ten nights of Dhul-Hijjah, giving the surah a connection to the sacred season of Hajj.

89:15-16

As for man, when his Lord tries him and is generous to him and favours him, he says, "My Lord has honoured me."

The surah diagnoses a core human delusion: measuring divine love by worldly gain and loss, rather than by true guidance and righteousness.
