Al-Ghashiyah – "The Overwhelming Event" – opens with a stark question about the Day of Judgement that will come over all people. The surah vividly portrays two contrasting groups: the humiliated faces of those who rejected faith, exhausted and given scorching drink, and the radiant faces of the believers resting in high gardens. It then pivots to ask the disbelievers to reflect on creation – the camel, the sky, the mountains, the earth – as proofs of the Creator's power and the Prophet's role as a reminder, not a compeller.
أسباب النزول
Revealed in the early Meccan period when the Prophet was calling people to Islam amid mockery and rejection. The vivid contrast between the two groups in the Hereafter was intended to awaken the Quraysh to the gravity of their choice. Like Al-Ala, this surah was recited by the Prophet in the Friday and Eid prayers.
“Has there reached you the report of the Overwhelming Event? Faces that Day will be downcast.”
The dramatic rhetorical opening – "Has there reached you?" – creates urgency and draws the listener into witnessing the scene of Judgement as though it were already happening.
“So remind – you are only a reminder. You are not over them a controller.”
A foundational verse defining the prophetic role: reminding is the duty; compulsion is not. This verse is key to understanding Islamic ethics of da'wah.
