Overview

Recounts the destruction of Abraha's army, which came with elephants to demolish the Kaaba in the year of the Prophet's ﷺ birth. It stands as a sign to Quraysh that Allah protects His House, and a warning that no worldly power survives opposing Him.

Occasion of Revelation (Asbab al-Nuzul)

Abraha al-Ashram, the Abyssinian governor of Yemen, built a grand cathedral at Sanaa to divert Arab pilgrimage away from the Kaaba. When it failed, he marched on Makkah with an army led by elephants. ʿAbd al-Muttalib, the Prophet's ﷺ grandfather, refused to fight, saying the House has a Lord who will protect it. Allah sent flocks of birds carrying stones of baked clay.

The question is addressed to the Prophet ﷺ and through him to Quraysh, who knew this history within living memory. It is rhetorical, not a request for information; the evidence stood in front of them, and the Kaaba they circled was itself the proof.
