Al-Fil recalls the miraculous event of the Year of the Elephant (570 CE), the year of the Prophet's birth, when Abraha al-Ashram of Yemen led an army with war elephants to destroy the Kaaba. Allah sent flocks of birds (Ababeel) that pelted the army with stones of baked clay, destroying them utterly and leaving them like devoured stalks of grain. The surah serves as a reminder to the Quraysh that the Kaaba is under divine protection and that no earthly power can prevail against Allah's will.
أسباب النزول
The event was well within living memory for the Quraysh at the time of revelation. Abraha's defeat was witnessed by the elders of Makkah and was commemorated as a sign of divine favour on the Kaaba. The surah's rhetorical question – "Have you not seen how your Lord dealt with the companions of the elephant?" – presupposes their knowledge of the event and uses it as proof of Allah's power to protect His house.
“Have you not considered how your Lord dealt with the companions of the elephant? Did He not make their plan into misguidance?”
The rhetorical opening assumes that the Quraysh know this history well – it was fifty years before the revelation. The question transforms a political-military memory into a theological proof: Allah thwarted the greatest army of its day to protect His House.
