Overview

Quraysh is among the shortest surahs, directed specifically at the tribe of Quraysh. It reminds them of the two blessings that sustained their tribal prosperity: the winter trade journey to Yemen and the summer trade journey to Syria – both made safe by Allah's protection. On account of this protection and provision, they are commanded to worship the Lord of this House (the Kaaba) who fed them from hunger and gave them security from fear. Many scholars read this surah as a continuation of Al-Fil, with both sharing a connected argument.

أسباب النزول

Occasion of Revelation (Asbab al-Nuzul)

The Quraysh had a unique status among Arab tribes as the custodians of the Kaaba, which granted them safe passage throughout the Arabian Peninsula and the privilege of conducting lucrative trade caravans. The surah was revealed to remind them that these privileges – and their very security and prosperity – were gifts from Allah, the Lord of the House they served, creating an obligation of gratitude through worship.

Notable Verses

106:3-4

Let them worship the Lord of this House, who fed them, preventing hunger, and made them safe, shielding them from fear.

The surah's conclusion delivers both command and argument simultaneously: worship is obligated because of the two gifts of provision (food) and safety – the material foundations of Qurayshi civilization, both sourced entirely from Allah.
