Al-Jinn reveals that a group of jinn listened to the Quran being recited, believed in it, and returned to warn their people. Their report, quoted in the surah, affirms the Quran's guidance, critiques the earlier practice of seeking refuge with jinn (which only increased transgression), confirms the reality of the Hereafter, and marvels at the heavens being guarded against eavesdropping. The surah establishes that the Prophet's mission encompasses both humans and jinn, and concludes with the absolute knowledge of the unseen belonging to Allah alone.
أسباب النزول
Revealed after an incident during the Prophet's return from Ta'if, when he recited the Quran at night in Nakhlah and a group of jinn overheard him. Jibreel later informed him of their response. This event is also narrated in Surah Al-Ahqaf. The revelation served to comfort the Prophet after the rejection of Ta'if and to indicate that even the unseen world of the jinn was responding to his message.
“Say: It has been revealed to me that a group of jinn listened and said: Indeed we have heard a wondrous Quran. It guides to right conduct, and we have believed in it.”
The jinn's spontaneous recognition of the Quran's wonder and guidance – without the benefit of seeing miracles or meeting the Prophet – illustrates the Quran's innate power to convince pure hearts.
“He is the Knower of the unseen, and He does not disclose His knowledge of the unseen to anyone.”
A definitive statement on the monopoly of divine knowledge – the unseen belongs exclusively to Allah, closing any claim to occult knowledge by jinn, soothsayers, or any other being.
