Surah Nuh narrates the entire prophetic mission of Nuh in his own words, as he reports to Allah the nine hundred and fifty years of his call, his methods – public and private, day and night – and the stubborn resistance of his people. He details their obstinate refusal and their leaders' manipulation of the people through their idols. Finally, Nuh supplicates for the destruction of the disbelievers and the forgiveness of the believers. The surah is a sustained meditation on prophetic patience, divine justice, and the ecology of faith.
أسباب النزول
Revealed in the Makkan period as a consolation to the Prophet Muhammad, who faced sustained rejection from the Quraysh after years of preaching. Nuh's story – the longest single-figure narrative in Makkan suwar – was revealed to demonstrate that the pattern of rejection is ancient, that patient perseverance is the prophetic model, and that divine support ultimately vindicates the messenger.
“I said: Ask forgiveness of your Lord – He is indeed Forgiving. He will send the sky upon you in showers and give you increase in wealth and children.”
Nuh's call links repentance to material and ecological blessing – a scriptural basis for the Islamic understanding that divine forgiveness has worldly as well as spiritual consequences.
“My Lord, forgive me and my parents and whoever enters my house as a believer and the believing men and believing women.”
Nuh's closing supplication – after centuries of rejection he prays not for himself alone but for all believers across time, modelling the expansive compassion of the prophetic heart.
