At-Taghabun takes its name from the Day of Judgement, which is described as the Day of Mutual Disillusion – when every person will fully grasp what they gained and lost. The surah begins by glorifying Allah and affirming His creative sovereignty, addresses the reality of unbelief and belief, and then speaks directly to the trials that believers face from within their own households – spouses and children who may be their enemies – while counselling forgiveness, charity, and patient trust in Allah.
أسباب النزول
Revealed in the Madinan period to address the community's ongoing challenges with sincere commitment. Several verses were revealed specifically about those whose families – wives or children – dissuaded them from emigrating to Madinah. The verse "your wives and children may be enemies to you" startled some companions, and the subsequent call to forgiveness and generosity assured them that family loyalty need not become spiritual compromise.
“The Day He will assemble you for the Day of Assembly – that is the Day of Mutual Disillusion.”
The central image of the surah – all humanity assembled and the full extent of their choices revealed, producing a comprehensive reckoning of gains and losses that no worldly audit can match.
“No disaster strikes except by permission of Allah. And whoever believes in Allah – He will guide his heart.”
A profound consolation – every trial occurs by divine permission, and the one who responds with faith finds that Allah guides the heart through the loss rather than leaving it in confusion.
