Overview

At-Talaq provides detailed legislation on the Islamic procedure for divorce, including the obligation to observe the prescribed waiting period ('iddah), the rights of divorced women regarding housing and maintenance, and the rulings on breastfeeding after divorce. Running through these practical rulings is a recurring call to taqwa and reliance on Allah, framing family law within a wider moral consciousness. The surah concludes with a magnificent vision of the seven heavens and the all-encompassing divine command.

أسباب النزول

Occasion of Revelation (Asbab al-Nuzul)

Several verses were revealed in response to Abdullah ibn Umar's divorce of his wife during her menstrual period – which the Prophet declared invalid and commanded him to take her back and wait for the lawful period. This incident prompted the revelation of the detailed divorce regulations. Other verses addressed the broader community's need for clear guidance on marriage dissolution, which was a source of social conflict in early Madinah.
