Az-Zalzalah paints a vivid scene of the final earthquake that will shake the earth to its core, causing it to disgorge all its secrets and burdens. The earth itself, inspired by its Lord, will testify to all that was done upon it. Then humanity will come forth in scattered groups to be shown their deeds – with the unshakeable principle that anyone who does an atom's weight of good or evil will see it. This surah is considered equivalent in reward to a quarter of the Quran.
أسباب النزول
Scholars differ on whether this surah is Meccan or Madinan, with the majority opinion leaning Madinan. The Prophet described it as equivalent to a quarter of the Quran in reward due to the comprehensive moral principle it contains. Ibn Masud reported that when this surah was revealed, the Companions were astonished at the precision of its final principle regarding even an atom's weight of good and evil.
“So whoever does an atom's weight of good will see it, and whoever does an atom's weight of evil will see it.”
Arguably the most comprehensive statement of divine justice in the Quran. Abdullah ibn Masud called these the most important verses of the whole Quran. They confirm that no act – however small – is beyond Allah's knowledge and record.
The Prophet (peace be upon him) said this surah is equivalent to a quarter of the Quran. It is also known as "the surah that makes one cautious" because of the precision of divine accountability it describes.
