Al-Bayyinah addresses the People of the Book and the polytheists who, despite being in a state of expectation for a messenger with clear proofs, continued in their ways once he arrived. The surah clarifies that the People of the Scripture only divided after the clear evidence came to them, not before. It then states the essence of the true religion – worship Allah sincerely, establish prayer, and give zakah – before declaring the two outcomes: the disbelievers as the worst of creatures and the believers who do righteous deeds as the best of creatures, eternally dwelling in the gardens of Eden.
أسباب النزول
Revealed in Madinah after the Prophet had established relations with the Jewish and Christian communities there. The surah addresses the paradox that despite centuries of prophetic anticipation and scriptural knowledge, many of the People of the Book refused to follow the final messenger when he arrived. The phrase "the best of creatures" became a celebrated title for believers and was applied by the Companions to themselves.
“And they were not commanded except to worship Allah, sincere to Him in religion, inclining to truth, and to establish prayer and to give zakah.”
A comprehensive distillation of the essence of all divine religion: sincere monotheism, consistent prayer, and charitable giving. Scholars regard this verse as encapsulating the maqasid (objectives) of Islamic practice.
“Indeed, those who have believed and done righteous deeds – those are the best of creatures.”
The Companions quoted this verse with joy. The Prophet confirmed to Ibn Abi Rawaha that "you and your companions are the best of creatures" – but scholarly consensus is that the description applies to all true believers throughout time.
