Overview

Surah Maryam is dedicated to the story of Maryam (Mary) and the miraculous birth of Isa (Jesus), making it the only surah named after a woman. It also tells the stories of Zakariyya and his son Yahya (John the Baptist), and briefly mentions Ibrahim, Musa, Ismail, and Idris. The surah was among those recited by the first Muslim emigrants to Abyssinia before the Negus (king), who wept upon hearing it and granted the Muslims protection.

أسباب النزول

Occasion of Revelation (Asbab al-Nuzul)

This surah was revealed during the period of severe persecution in Makkah, before the Hijra to Abyssinia. The story of Maryam and Isa was particularly relevant for the Negus (an Ethiopian Christian king) who gave the Muslim refugees asylum. When Jafar ibn Abi Talib recited this surah to the Negus, the king was so moved by the Quranic account of Mary and Jesus that he drew a line on the ground and said: "The difference between our view and yours is not more than this line."

Notable Verses

19:30

He (Isa as an infant) said: Indeed, I am the servant of Allah. He has given me the Scripture and made me a prophet.

The infant Isa speaks from the cradle to defend his mother from accusations of immorality. His first words affirm his servitude to Allah, directly countering claims of his divinity. This miraculous speech was itself one of his signs.

Virtues of this Surah

The recitation of this surah before the Negus of Abyssinia resulted in the protection of the first Muslim emigrants. Scholars note it is particularly powerful in conveying Islamic theology about Jesus to Christians.
