The Quran refers to him with the phrase "Peace upon Il Yasin" (as-Saffat 37:130) – classical commentators divided on whether "Il Yasin" is a plural variant honouring the family of Ilyas or should be read as "Ilyasin" as a variant form of his name. Some classical genealogies (e.g. Ibn Kathir's Qisas al-Anbiya via Isra'iliyyat) trace Ilyas back through Aaron (Harun) via his son Eleazar (al-'Azar) and grandson Phinehas (Finhas), placing him roughly in the era of the Israelite kings after the split under Rehoboam. This tracing is Isra'iliyyat corresponding to 1 Kings 17-2 Kings 2 and is transmitted with the standard classical caveat. No wife or children of Ilyas are named in any authentic Islamic source.
Praised in the Quran for standing firm against the widespread idol worship of Ba'l. Some scholars hold that Ilyas is the same as Idris, though the majority consider them separate Prophets. His salutation is remembered in the Quran: 'Peace be upon Ilyas!'
